If we listen to those opinions, we will find we are lacking or needing to be more than we feel we are. But if we look in the Word of God, we can discover amazing truths about our true identity. Let’s dig deeper in this free Bible lesson on Job 33:4 and discover the life God gives us.
Sometimes in Scripture, we come across a verse, through a comment made by someone that may or may not actually follow God. But the words spoken are given to us by God to learn from and help us in our walk with Him. Job 33:4 is one of those verses.
You see, Job had lost everything and had suffered great pain.
He was visited by 3 friends who had opinions and many words to say to Job about who God was, who Job was, what he must have done and should do. We all have friends like that too, right? But Job’s friends were not giving good advice.
Job, his situation and his friends can be used to help us in our spiritual and physical walk with the Lord.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
The book of Job can be a hard read to see someone suffer to the extent that Job did. He lost everything. His family, fortunes and his home. His friends if you can call them friends, offered some bad advice as to why he was under this horrific suffering. Let’s discover the “best” advice Job’s friends gave him and see Job 33:4 meaning.

The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
One friend, Elihu, may have been misguided in his friendly advice, but he does say one statement that can help us remember who we are and who God is.
Job 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Honestly, these words have such beautiful meaning. Sometimes we forget how they apply to our lives.
We know that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
But we can learn so much more about God by digging into the next few verses.
The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Think about that for just a second. God’s Spirit was on the move hovering over the waters.
Then God said…..
God spoke into existence the world and all that is in it.
When words are spoken, breath passes across the vocal cords and then out of the mouth to form words and sounds. Except in the case of God, whose breath creates life.
The interesting and fun connection in this section of verses is that the word “spirit” is “Ruwach”, which means breath or mind of heaven.
God’s breath was hovering.
God’s breath was speaking.
God’s breath was creating life.
He spoke and created every single detail of creation into existence.
Then on day 6, He created man and with that He also created something not mentioned by words, “relationship”.
God desires a relationship with you! The world has many distractions, opinions and struggles to confuse your purpose. There is nothing greater on this earth or more valuable that your relationship with the Lord.
His breath gives you life so that you in turn give your life to Him.
His breath is captured inside the pages and verses of His Word to guide you, protect you and give your life meaning.
If the Lord values your life to give you eternal life, will you give your life to Him? Will you share all that He is and does with others? Will you live this life deeply rooted in His image found only in His Word?
Who are you listening to the Word or the world?
Where is your greatest struggle of knowing who you are?
Magazine? radio? television? friends? other people’s opinions? social media?
Do you realize that the breath of God created you? How would that affect the way you see yourself?
God’s Word is His breath that gives us life. It is as vital as the air our lungs breathe. Without His Word, we would not know how to live life on this earth.
Did you catch in whose image man was created?
God’s Word gives us more details into how He made man in Genesis 2.
Genesis 2:7
then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
He formed man from the dust of the ground like a potter forms objects out of clay. But a potter cannot give his creation life by breathing into it, only God can.
God took the creation of man that He formed with His hands and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
Job’s friend was absolutely correct in the comment that the Spirit of God had made him and the breath of the Almighty gave him life.
You too can say it.
He made you.
He breathes life into you.
And the life He now gives you came from the last breath of His Son, Jesus, dying on the cross for you so that you can have eternal life.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Do you recognize that the Spirit of God lives in you?
You were formed by God’s hand and He breathed life into you. What does that statement say about you and the relationship you have with God?
An image is a reflection. How is God being reflected through you?
God’s Word is His breath to help you live on this earth.
Some people view the Bible, God’s Word, as ancient words, outdated, or full of what not to dos.
Instead, His Words are for our benefit. They are to help us know Him more and know who we are to Him.
Boundaries are for our safety and to help save our life. Few people resent an airline’s warning sticker placed over the door stating, “Do not open during flight!”. Why? Because if you open that door during flight, you will cause a chain reaction of danger. Your life and others will be at peril because of falling out in to the air, and the air pressure that will take the breath from you.
The airline does not know you. You do not have a relationship with them, but you observe their warning signs.
Why then do people resent God’s warnings of danger in life?
When Jesus rose from the grave, He told His followers that He would not be with them long before He would return to be with His Father in heaven.
He reminded them that He would send the Holy Spirit who would be their counselor, guide and God’s presence IN them.
He ascended to heaven before their eyes and then later, His Holy Spirit came down on them like a dove and fire from the sky.
God’s presence would ignite a breath of fresh air into His people like CPR to lungs. Filled with His Holy Spirit, they went about preaching and teaching people throughout the lands about who God was and who they were if they believed Him.
Those words are recorded in His Word, the Bible, for you to take in like the air your breathe.
His Word is to help you live on this earth until you can live with Him in heaven.
The Spirit of God is in you and the breath of the Almighty gives you life.
What do you need to do in return with this life you have been given?
Psalm 150:6
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
What happens when you praise the Lord?
When your purpose is to Praise the Lord, how does that change the way you think?
Have you stopped and taken time to listen to God’s Holy Spirit in your life?
Have you considered that the same powerful Spirit, which was the breath hovering over the waters of Creation, is the same Holy Spirit you possess inside of you?
Colossians 3:9-11
Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free;but Christ is all, and in all.
