How to get kids excited about the Bible

Helping Children Learn and Love the Bible

The Bible is the most incredible book—filled with stories of faith, wisdom, and God’s love. But how do we help children not only learn about the Bible and also develop a lifelong love for God’s Word?

The world is full of distractions that want to get in the way of following God. Music, tv shows, movies, ads, magazines, books and so much more make parenting a child in the Lord harder each day. Some days you feel like you’re playing whack a mo or doing damage control from all the bad influences around children. But God’s Word is filled with love, amazement, miracles, hope, peace and examples of how to live.

Whether you’re teaching toddlers, preschoolers, or older kids, you can make the Bible engaging, understandable and fun. You just need to tap into their learning styles to help them learn and remember. Are you and your children visual, auditory, reading or kinesthetic learners?

Discovering a relationship with Jesus will help them the rest of their life and all the relationships they encounter along the way.

Let’s explore creative ways to introduce children to the Bible, help them build a strong foundation of faith and make the Bible fun for kids so that they learn and remember what’s most important.

We’ve answered and listed many ways to make the Bible fun for kids. But if you want our #1 way right now for what makes the Bible fun for kids the answer is you do!

They follow your example. So if you find joy in the Bible, so will they. If you have fun learning, they will too!

How to make the Bible fun for kids

How to make the Bible fun for Kids?

I did a Google search on helping kids learn the Bible and the question, “How to make the Bible fun for kids” was the top result. Kinda makes my heart sad to read.

The Bible is full of excitement, incredible people, events and stories and love.

It is not filled with color, bells and whistles, like today’s video games, books, shows, toys and apps.

Maybe the better question to ask is, “How do I help my children develop a love for the Bible and an understanding of faith?”

We as parents and educators need to help children understand how they learn, present the Bible to them in ways that encourage engagement and be the best example of faith in God as possible.

After all, children learn best from us by the life we live and lead.

As with most things around them, younger children learn through hands-on experiences and play. Making Bible learning fun in their eyes, ensures that kids stay engaged and retain what they learn. Here are some creative ways to bring the big book of the Bible to life for little minds:

  • Bible Story Art – Encourage kids to draw, paint, or create crafts that illustrate Bible stories. We have hundreds of Bible Art Lessons to can help you connect a Bible verse or theme to a visual art reminder.

  • Act It Out – Turn Bible stories into mini skits or puppet shows. Both ideas encourage the entire body to remember a story or concept from the Bible. Act out forgiveness, sharing, loving, helping, or what the fruit of the spirit looks like to a child.

  • Bible Games – Create scavenger hunts, matching games, or board games based on Bible themes. Trivia games are a fun way to learn for those readers or auditory learners.

  • Music & Movement – Another way to get the entire body involved is music and movement. Sing songs with Bible verses and incorporate hand motions to make them memorable. We learn the  sing the ABCs with song why not the Bible? Make up songs to stories or create a Bible timeline with movements.

  • Sensory Play – Use sand, water, or clay for Bible scenes and make learning interactive. Finger painting, sensory bins and felt boards area also great items to include in sensory play. Anything that is hands on can make a memory!

How to Inspire Creative Learning with the Bible

Creativity is a wonderful way to help kids connect with Scripture and make it personal. Here are some ideas to encourage creative Bible learning:

  • Bible Journaling – Allow kids to illustrate their favorite Bible verses in a journal. For some kids this might be a blank or bullet journal, some will enjoy a planner and others  a printable page with journal prompts like our in our shop and creative library

  • DIY Bible Illustrations – Have children create their own books summarizing Bible stories in their own words and drawings. Children can draw the verse or story they are learning in their own style. This could be coloring book drawings, storybook illustrations or full on artwork. A picture really is worth a thousand words!

  • Interactive Bible Maps – Explore biblical geography with hands-on maps and activities. Gotta admit I’m a history buff. Love a good map especially when using a timeline!

  • Nature & Creation Exploration – Show kids how God’s Word connects to the world around them. Every single item in creation bears His fingerprints of detail. No two leaves are just alike and neither are you!

  • Coloring Pages- Coloring in one of the first art experiences that children encounter at an early age. Some adults still enjoy them! You will find hundreds in our shop and creative library!
